From Apprentice To Master: Becoming A Licensed Plumber

You’ve just spent months training to become an apprentice plumber. You’ve spent another year working under a master plumber. You have been learning and gaining invaluable experience, but it isn’t enough. You want to become your own boss; you want to become a licensed plumber.

What It Takes

If you want to be a licensed plumber, you must realize that every applicant for a plumber's license must have worked for no less than three years as an apprentice before they are eligible to take the exam. This means that you must have been studying under a master plumber for 3 years in order to even qualify. I know that it seems like a long time to be someone’s apprentice, but the benefits of your experience will be obvious in the end. Not only must you have worked with a master plumber for 3 years you must have completed more 300 hours of plumbing theory.

In most states you have to be at least 18 years old, meet training and experience requirements, and pass a written exam in order to become a licensed plumber. As implied by the above information, using an active apprenticeship as a way to study for your exam is a great idea. In fact, that is how most people study for their exam. Even if you have years and years of experience you must pass the written exam.

What Else It Takes

Here is a list of very helpful knowledge and experience that will help you with your licensing exam.

-You should be able to work with relatively little supervision.
-Have basic problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills.
-The ability to comprehend work orders, diagrams, technical drawings and manuals.
-Honestly estimate job costs. Don’t overprice for more money.
-You should know how to measure and have basic math skills.
-You should be able to interpret the output of various gauges and other instruments.
-Being dexterous is a must.
-You should have an aptitude for mechanics.
-Having the ability to use hand and power tools is important.
-You absolutely must work well with your customers.
-You should be able to keep inventory and prepare reports on finished work and the parts that you used.
-You should be able to physically bend, stoop, carry, and lift more than 50 lbs.

Although this list is a large one it is totally doable. If you really have the desire to become a licensed plumber, you can easily gain the instruction and experience necessary to qualify for the licensing exam.

Anyone who wants to be a plumber is encouraged to get licensed. Unlicensed plumbers are subject to fines and imprisonment. Take the time, do the work, and do it honestly. There is a world of homeowners out there that need quality plumbing work.
